New Population Projections

The Centre for Population has unveiled its latest projections for Australia's population over the next decade. According to the 2025 Population Statement, the Australian population is expected to reach 31.5 million by the 2035-36 period.

The findings indicate that Australia will continue to add more than 300,000 residents annually through the latter part of this decade. However, net overseas migration, which has been the primary driver of this growth, has experienced a notable decline. Net overseas migration is expected to further moderate with projections estimating a drop to 260,000 in 2025-26, continuing its decline over the forecast period.

The report highlights that the states of Victoria, Queensland, and Western Australia are anticipated to be the fastest-growing regions. These top states are expected to experience growth from net overseas migration, while Queensland's growth is likely to be driven by significant net interstate migration. Western Australia is projected to grow at a rate of 1.5% over the next decade, followed closely by Victoria at 1.4% and Queensland at 1.3%. This growth trend underscores the pressing need for housing solutions.

As Australia navigates this evolving demographic landscape, addressing the corresponding housing demands will be crucial in supporting its growing population.
